A study was conducted in eight different locations in Tangail Agricultural
Development Project with non-reinforced concrete buried pipe irrigation
systems. The result of this study showed quantifiable benefits from buried pipe
systems, compared to equivalent lined or earth channel systems, saving the
agricultural land of 1.20% of the command area.
Economic performance of some irrigated crops under farmers' management
was documented and cropwise benefit cost ratio was obtained greater than unity
in 57% cases on full cost basis. Cost of different distribution systems was
compared to different traditional earthen open channel alternatives and found
nonreinforced cement concrete buried pipe systems for surface irrigation
economical than other distribution systems.
Buried pipe system increases the command area by 23% and significantly
reduces the conveyance losses by 91%. Besides, this system saves 16%
irrigation cost over traditional earthen open channel system.
