Performance of mungbean genotypes in rice-wheat- mungbean cropping systems
Abstract
Abstract :
A study was conducted at Chakai village under Birganj upazila of Dinajpur district to select suitable mungbean genotypes to fit in the Rice-Wheat- Fallow cropping systems. Nine advanced lines of mungbean i.e. GK7. GK65, VC6173A, VC3960-88, VC6153B-20G, VC6153B-20P, IPK2558-97, ML267, ML613 and one released variety BUmug2 were tested in randomized complete block design with three replications. The majority of the genotypes except IPK2558-97, ML267 and ML613 were short duration type to Fit well in the rice- wheat system. The genotype VC6173A produced the highest grain yield and it was 17% higher over that of check variety BUmug2 and 89% higher over 1PK2558-97 which produced the lowest yield. The genotype VC6173A appeared to be the best genotype to fit in the fallow period after wheat and thus transforming the pattern into Rice-Wheat-Mungbcan cropping pattern. At the end of the season, soil nitrogen and ognanic carbon content increased significantly over initial level as a result of mungbean cultivation in the fallow period in Rice-Wheal-Fallow system. Moreover, inclusion of mungbean into the above cropping system was found profitable in terms of benefit cost ratio.
