Incidence of potato virus y (pvy) and its effect on growth and yield of eleven chili germplasms in bangladesh

Abstract

Abstract : Eleven chili (Capsicum annum L.) genotypes were evaluated under natural field condition to observe the prevalence and effect of Potato virus Y (PVY) on their growth and yield. Identification of PVY on chili plant was done by symptomological, biological and serological study. The results of the study revealed that the incidence of PVY varied from 0.00 to 11.34% depending on different chili varieties. Highest PVY incidence was found in Chittagong while Comilla-2 was found free from infection. Similarly, the growth and yield contributing characters of Chittagong were most atfected by PVY infection showing 64.65, 60.21, 92.36, 54.27and 57.42% reduction in plant height, canopy diameter, fruit number, fruit length and fruit weight, respectively. However, Comilla-2 was free from such adverse effect from PVY infection. Experimental results suggested that Comilla-2 could be cultivated as a PVY tolerant variety.
