Abstract :
The experim ent was conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Farm, Gazipur, in Aman and Boro seasons to determine the physico-chemical properties ol’Basmati genotypes. Basmati PNR, Basmati 370, Basmati 375, Basmati-D and traditional rice Kalijira and Kataribhog were transplanted from 22 July and continued up to 7 October in Aman, 1999 and from 10 December 2000 to 10 January 2001 in Boro seasons at an intervals of 15 days. Thirty-day-old seedling was planted in Aman and 40-day-old seedling was used in Boro seasons. Result showed that the milling outturn, head rice percentage, protein content slightly increased in the crop that planted on 22 August to 7 September and thereafter these are gradually decreased in Aman and planted December in Boro seasons.
The other grain quality parameters slightly varied due to the variation of planting date in both the seasons. The milling outturn and head rice were higher in Basmati-D. Kalijira and Kataribhog. The grain of Basmati PNR, Basmati 370 and Basmati 375 were long slender. The strong aroma was found in Basmati 370,
Kalijira and Kataribhog irrespective of planting date in Aman. While mild or moderate level aroma was found of these genotypes in Boro season. Thus, better grain quality including aroma of Basmati 370, Basmati-D, Kalijira and Kataribhog can be obtained by planting in Aman season especially from 22 August to 7 September.
