Growth and bulb development of garlic as influenced by time of planting
Abstract
Abstract :
An experiment was conducted to study the effect of four planting dates from 1 November to 31 December on the growth and bulbing of garlic (Allium sativum L.) under shortday condition of Bangladesh. Planting dates had significant effect on emergence, crop growth, crop duration and bulb yield. Higher fresh bulb weight (FBW) in November plantings (November 01 and November 21) was due to higher dry matter (DM) production, greater plant height, leaf number, leaf area, and bulb diameter at different stages of crop growth. Plantings during November 1 and 21 were found to be more favourable by availing longer cooler climate for plant growth and bulb development. In delayed plantings (December 11 and December 31), crop growth and bulbing were adversely affected by prevailing higher temperatures. The cultivar 'Rajshahi' showed superiority over 'FaridpurP as evaluated through various morphological, phenological and yield characteristics of garlic.
