Abstract The gcnctic variability and correlation cocfficicnts wcrc studicd in 20 divcrsc strains of proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L) for eight important agronomic characters. Grain yield, 1000-grain weight and numbcr of primary tillcrs/plant had a high dcgrcc of genetic variability. Thcsc traits wcrc found to be highly amcnablc to selection, as indicated by high heritability along with high gcnctic advance. Thc grain yicld/plant was corrclatcd positively with grain wcight and number or primary tillers, and negatively with days to flowcr and car length.
