Abstract : A study was carried out at Breeder Seed Production Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Debiganj, Panchagarh to assess the avoidable loss on five varieties of blackgram viz., Barimash-1, Barimash-2, Barimash-3, Binamash-1 and a Local variety against the stemfly, Ophiomyia phaseoli (Tryon) infestation during the period from August to December 2003. Plant growth parameters such as plant height, number of branch per plant and number of leaf per plant were significantly reduced due to the stemfly infestation. The number and weight of pods per plant, number and weight of grains per plant and 1000 seed-weight and the yield were influenced significantly by the stemfly. The avoidable loss in Barimash-1, Barimash-2. Barimash-3, Binamash and the Local variety were 37.24%, 34.50%, 35.08%, 24.19% and 24.24%, respectively.en_US
