Abstract : A study was conducted at the experimental Farm of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur, during the period from October 2002 to May 2003 to evaluate the effect of sowing method and time on viable seed production of lettuce. There were two planting methods viz. Direct sowing and transplanting, and five planting times viz. October 8, November 2, November 27, December 22 and January 16 in the experiment. Both planting method and time significantly influenced most of the characters pertaining to quality seed production. Direct sown plants showed better performance over transplanted plants in respect of seed production (367.67 kg/ha). Higher seed production was recorded in November 2 planting and second highest was recorded in October 10 planting which was statistically similar with November 27 planting and then gradually decrease in late planting. Quality seed production was recorded from first four dates of planting. The highest seed production was recorded in plants grown from direct seed sowing at November 2, which might be considered as the best combination of sowing method and time for lettuce seed production.en_US
