dc.description.abstractAbstract : Two experiments were conducted during Transplanted Aman,1990 and 1991 at Gazipur with BR11 to determine the effect and contribution of splitting tillers on the growth and yield as compared to those of the intact mother hill. From the two years results it was observed that the intact mother hills gave 0.5 - 0.9 t/ha higher yield than those of all splitted and replanted tillers. Keeping 4 tillers with the mother hill and replanting of 4 splitted tillers/hill gave about 0.3 t/ha higher yield than those of keeping 2 tillers with the mother hill and replanting of 2 splitted tillers/hill. The intact mother hills produced panicles/m2(223-241), less spikelets/panicle (106- 115) and lower sterility percentage (9.6-11.5%). The splitted and replanted hills produced relatively less panicles/m2(167-195), more spikelets/panicle (133-152) and higher sterility percentage (21.3-25.3%). No variation was found in 1000 grain weight in all treatments because it was strictly a varietal character. Plant heights were shorter by 6-9 cm, straw yields were lower by about 1.0 t/ha, flowering and maturity were delayed by 6-9 days in splitted and replanted hills as compared to those of intact mother hills. About 4 times new area can be replanted per unit area of main crop sustaining good yields when 4 tillers were kept with the mother hill and 4 splitted tillers were replanted/hill .en_US
